  • Bud 118 comes from a cross of Moscow Pear (a very winter hardy scion cultivar) and a mixture of M-8 and M-9 pollen. This breeding was done by Dr. Budagovski in Michurinsk, U.S.S.R.

  • Bud 118 produces trees that are 95% the size of those on seedling rootstocks. The vigor of Bud 118 is particularly valuable on dry, sandy orchard sites.

  • Bud 118 is resistant to collar rot (Phytophthora cactorum) and apple scab. This stock is slightly susceptible to crown gall and powdery mildew. Bud 118 is extremely winter hardy and has reportedly survived temperatures of -16° Fahrenheit with no root damage.

  • Bud 118 roots very well by mound layering and produces few lateral branches. Bud 118 produces large callipered, well-branched maiden trees and is well adapted to various soil types.

  • Bud 118 has a yield efficiency that compares to EMLA 111 and is recommended for production in cold climates as well as under replant conditions. This stock can be employed as an interstem base on rich soils or as an under stock for spur-type varieties on poor soils.
